This beautiful area of the El Camino Memorial Park, is where my mom (1933~2010) and my Oma, Liselotte Haf née Kaiser-Saule's (1913~2010) final resting spot is located . . . tucked away, sitting up on a hill overlooking a large part of the cemetery.

The Wedding Anniversary of Albert and Lillie Mae Tabeling ~

~ Happy Anniversary to my great-grandparents, Albert and Lillie Mae (née Pate) Tabeling ~

Today, one hundred and ten years ago, in 1902, my paternal great-grandparents, Albert 'Fritz' Tabeling (1870~1919) and Lillie Mae Pate (1879~1919), were married in Breckinridge Co., Kentucky.

Albert and Lillie Mae had nine children, Oletha (1902~1970), Maggie (1903~1919), Josephine (1906~1962), my grandmother, Ines (1908~1983), Gladys Ollie (1910~1980), the twins, Morgan (1913~1913) and Mamie (1913~1913), Viola 'Bessie' (1915~2003) and Infant Tabeling (1919~1919).

It is believed that my great-grandfather, Albert and 16 year old Maggie, died during the 1918-1919 Pandemic Flu. According to my great-grandmother, Lillie Mae's death certificate, death was due to a miscarriage, complicated by the flu in 1919 . . . it is believed that both Infant and Lillie Mae were buried together . . . Albert and Lillie Mae, died only five days apart from each other, leaving my grandmother, Ines, and her sisters, Oletha, Gladys, Viola and Josephine, orphaned.

According to the U.S. 1920 Census for Breckinridge Co., Kentucky, my grandmother, Ines and her sister, Gladys, were taken in by the Laslie Family on Hartford Rd. in Cloverport, KY. I am still researching where Oletha, Viola and Josephine, ended up living. I do believe they resided with their aunt Emma Robinson née Tabeling . . . the search continues.

In 2009, my beautiful mom (1933~2010), myself, my husband and my granddaughter, all traveled to Louisville, Kentucky to meet and visit my aunt Ginnie for the first time. We then traveled for about two hours from her home to Cloverport, Kentucky, visiting the very peaceful, quaint and tucked away, Cloverport Cemetery, where Albert, Lillie Mae, Infant Tabeling, Mamie, Morgan, and Maggie, are buried together in one family plot. The Tabeling Family has never had a headstone or grave marker . . . one day, I would like to be able to have a marker made and placed on their grave.

Three Years Blogging ~

Another year has passed and my Blogiversary is here once again! It's hard to believe it passed so quickly. I had big blogging dreams for 2010, but as non-genealogy life stuff happened, I didn't blog as much as I would have liked. I appreciate those that have visited and left comments for me with the few posts I did manage to get out there. I also discovered a cousin, Russ Worthington over at A Worthington Weblog . . . so blogging has been very rewarding and I appreciate the friendships I have made.

I have learned so much in the last three years and I say a big thank you to many of my genea~blogger friends who have helped, supported and guided me and just made it fun to be here. In the very beginning, my writing really needed help. Thanks to Thomas for giving me the opportunity to do the "May I Introduce To You" interviews at GeneaBloggers, my writing improved greatly and I am now a little more comfortable with posting.

I still consider myself a "newbie" researcher and family historian with a very long way to go . . . but, I am very excited to get back into my research in 2012, and with that, I hope to have more to blog about here . . . here's to a new year of sharing with you and keeping up the search.

A little Christmas cheer from my home to yours ~

The Christmas tree that stands so beautiful and tall, adorned with ornaments as old as I am . . . belonged to my beautiful mom (1933~2010). I was blessed to inherit her family room tree (she always had two artificial trees standing in her home ) and ornaments. At first, it was difficult but as I continued to decorate for the holidays . . . I felt surrounded by her and all Christmas things she loved so much. I have to say, it feels good, and I think now the hard part will be having to take it all down.

I also inherited a few pieces of her Thomas Kinkade Christmas Village collection . . . there are many more pieces to the collection I hope to own someday. It's a beautiful village and each time I look at it . . . I smile and mom warms my heart and I know she is here with our family.

I have always had a little tree with the cute little burlap bottom for Christmas (purchased at my local craft store) on my kitchen counter for many years. I would adorn this little tree with Christmas cookie cutters and lights. Some of the Christmas shaped cookie cutters once belonged to mom . . . she gave them to me for the kids. Our cookie cutter tree always makes my kitchen bright and sweet...the kids smile when they see it! Now, I have two miniature Christmas trees in my kitchen/family room . . . .

~ First Ancestor Tree ~

Right after my maternal Uncle Adi passed away in 2004, I came up with the idea to put photos on tags of all my family members who have passed and would not be with us during Christmas. I wasn't sure what I wanted to do yet but I found paper photo tags at my local craft store and thought that they would work for the time being.

I didn't like the size or that "store bought look" at the time but at least I could honor my loved ones on the tree right away. I had always wanted to make my own tags and last year I had shared the idea with a fellow blogger . . . so in 2010 I made my own. Tammy, over at Rosie Cotton liked the idea then, so in 2010, she contacted me asking if I had done them and to check hers out. Tammy's came out beautiful and she motivated me to get started on mine.

It was hard for me to get motivated that year (2010) because I had to add my beautiful Mom (1933~2010) and my Oma (1913~2010). I just couldn't get myself started but I knew I needed to. I got together with my neighbor Claire . . . she really helped me to push myself and get the creative juices flowing!
Between Claire and Tammy, I finally did get my tags done (2010) and I was very happy with them. So . . . thank you Tammy and Claire for supporting me in a very delicate project. It's still difficult to see my beautiful Mom's tag on that tree . . . she is so very missed . . . all of our Ancestors are very missed.

I decided to place my Ancestor tree under my family tree chart . . . which is very near my kitchen and can be seen from just about every angle. It's a perfect spot I must say.

Last year, several bloggers made the suggestion to keep my ancestor tree up all year... I am reporting, this year (2011) that I did leave it up all year, each day I would plug in the lights . . . I think it's a great way to keep our loved ones who have passed, close to us all year and especially at Christmas time.

In Loving Memory to Uncle Helmut Haf ~ 1940 ~ 1994

Today, the 20th day of December is the anniversary of the death of my maternal uncle Helmut. Uncle Helmut was an identical twin to his brother, Adalbert Haf ~ 3 Oct. 1940 ~ 2 October 2004.

Uncle Helmut and uncle Adalbert died of the same disease exactly ten years apart. Their deaths have been very hard on our family...we miss you both. You can not mention one without the other.

Happy Birthday, Oma 1913 ~ 2010 ~

Today, my (maternal grandmother) Oma, Liselotte Haf née Kaiser-Saule (1913 ~ 2010) would have been 98 years old. Oma was born in Zurich, Switzerland. What a wonderful day that was ~ Happy Birthday Oma, we love and miss you!

Oma grew up and resided in Augsburg, Germany all of her life . . . very close to the town hall centre shown on the Christmas card above and in this live web cam (Christmas Market is closed at the time of this posting) of the Rathaus Plaza and Christmas Market. Augsburg is nine hours ahead ~ when the market is open, it's absolutely beautiful to watch.

My wonderful and unforgettable memory of traveling was when mom and I flew back to Augsburg, Germany - a more than 2000 year old city. I was born in Augsburg and came to the U.S. when I was three. Mom was born and raised there. This was the first trip we made back together and to boot, we did it at Christmas time, the most beautiful time of the year to me.

Our flight was about an eighteen hour flight from LAX to Munich. We flew via Lufthansa. I will never forget that flight. Because we were going to be in Germany for a little over three weeks, mom had all of my class work and homework pre-arranged to take with me. I remember doing my school work on that plane! I remember we would get these really neat smelling (lemon scent) wet wipes after eating a meal. To this day, I am also reminded of that trip each time I encounter that familiar scent!

Once we landed in Munich, we would have about a one hour drive from Munich to Augsburg. Mom and I were quite tired but we didn't care, it was so exciting - I was in Germany! I remember how emotional it was to see my Opa (1907~1968), Oma (1913~2010) and great Oma (1888~1972) along with my two uncles (1940~1994) and (1940~2004) and aunt Gitta at the airport. I hadn't seem my Opa since I had left in 1957 and we were inseparable at one time. The photo above was taken upon that arrival.

I remember how beautiful the ride was to my Oma's home. Germany is gorgeous. It was snowing, cold and I was loving every minute of it! We went all over the place . . . to my great Oma, Margarete's, to my uncles homes and shopping at the Rathhaus Plaza.

I have the webcam of the Rathhaus Plaza on each and everyday right now, the famous and traditional Christmas market is in full swing. It's a great feeling to see a place that you were born in all the way across the ocean on a webcam and still feel as if you are there! It's like I get to travel there everyday. They are nine hours ahead so the best time to watch is around eight or nine a.m. from here in the states. Mom would watch it everyday too and she knew each trolley and where it was headed! My Oma lived just blocks from the plaza -she was ninety-six years old.

Mom and I along with my Opa, Oma and my uncles traveled to the Alp's. The Alp's are breath taking. What an experience it was to visit such a beautiful and magical place. Most of all, I enjoyed Christmas with all of the family members and having a very traditional German Christmas. The family, the food, the joy of being together was unforgettable.

Mom would try to go back each year, my daughter went back with my mom when she was thirteen (just as I did) at Christmas time. She also experienced a memorable time that will last her a lifetime.

That really is the only "big" trip that my family has made during the holidays. We normally stay within our area. Mom lived about an hour and a half away. We would travel to her home and spend an evening with her to have our Christmas together. It may have been a week or so before Christmas but with the kids grown and having their own families, it was much easier that way. Christmas Eve is spent in our home and Christmas Day the kids spend the day with their own families and in-laws.

Please note: This post originally ran for the Advent Calendar of Memories in December 2009 ~ Mom use to watch the Rathhaus webcam everyday, she grew up just down the street from this wonderful little center now alive with the Christmas market. Even though mom and Oma are not here with us...I continue to watch it each day too . . . after all, it's where I was born! My visit back there as described in this story . . . I very much remember the Rathhaus.

Advent Calendar ~ Christmas Cookies ~

~ Mom's home, Christmas 2009 ~

Christmas Cookies were a very big part of our Christmas. In November, mom (1933~2010) would start baking her cookies and store them in tin containers until about a week before Christmas. Mom would have platters full of each type of cookie on the table for when friends and family stopped by.

My favorite cookie as I had posted about in the Advent Calendar Holiday Foods post, was mom's own Spritz Cookie recipe! They are so good. I am a hardcore tea drinker, when I would get to mom's, the electric tea kettle goes on, and mom and I would sit and chat while I enjoy several Spritz cookies. These cookies always bring back such loving memories of Mom and home.

Mom still used a cookie press that she had brought with her from Germany when we came to the states. I have tried to make these cookies. It's pretty comical ~ the modern cookie press I have is a nightmare to use and my cookies come out disastrous each time! Until I was to inherit the German cookie press, I left the Spritz cookie making to mom.

Mom's German Spritz Cookies

1 cup of butter (2 sticks) softened
3/4 cup sugar
1 large egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon almond extract
2 cups flour
1/2 cup toasted sliced blanched almonds finely ground

Optional: toppings (sprinkles, cherries, etc.). In the last few years, mom has dipped half of the cookie in chocolate, which is my favorite.

~ Preheat oven to 375° ~

Cream butter, add sugar, beat until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs and extracts. Gradually blend in flour and almonds. Using either a cookie press or pastry bag, pipe different shapes (mom makes an S, or a round or straight 3" cookie, it's up to your imagination) onto un-greased cookie sheet. Bake for approximately 10 to 12 minutes or until a pale golden color. Remove cookies and cool on wire racks. Decorate as you please.

I have also started my own baking tradition: Banana Bread. It's not a cookie but I wanted to share it with you anyway. It is the best banana bread I have ever tasted. The recipe is from my childhood best friend, Sandy's mom (my second mom), Nita. This recipe is a huge hit around our house and I take a loaf to our friends that have a Christmas morning breakfast every year at their home. Nita's banana bread is wonderful and each time I make it, it brings a smile to my face with many wonderful memories. Thank you Nita, I love ya!

~ My home, 2011 ~

Nita's Banana Bread

(published with permission)

3 cups flour
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 or 2 cups sugar (I use 1 cup and its just right)
1 teaspoon salt

Mix all together, then add:
1 and 1/2 cup oil
1 and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
3 eggs
1 8oz can of crushed pineapple with the juice (I have used less and it's fine)
3 mashed bananas
Chocolate chips (optional - I always add chocolate chips, they are a nice addition.)

Bake in a greased and floured tube or bundt pan at 350° for about an hour. Keep checking with a toothpick to make sure you don't over cook it. Makes 2 loaves. This year, 2011, I decided to make muffins instead of loaves, I'm liking the muffins alot. I also used Nita's mixture of sugar and cinnamon and you can add pecans or walnuts, (Nita uses walnuts) finely chopped, mix the cinnamon, sugar and nuts together and sprinkle over the top of the batter before baking. Makes a wonderful topping.

Advent Calendar ~ Christmas Cards ~ Day 4

This card is from my uncle Adi (1940 ~ 2004) and aunt Gitta 2002

The card above is of the Rathaus Plaza, Augsburg, Germany. The clock tower, and the town city hall ~ the birth place of the author of this blog. Augsburg is over 2000 years old - each and everyday during the holiday season, I keep this ~ webcam ~ of the plaza up on my computer. And right now, the Christmas market is alive and bustling. It's like being right there! Keep in mind they are nine hours ahead, best time to view the webcam has been around nine a.m. California time. The Christmas lights, the street cars and the huge Christmas tree is a sight to behold. My Oma lived very close to this plaza. I remember walking around the shops on a trip back home when I was just thirteen. There are webcam's all over the world, it's amazing to watch them.

I have had a passion for cards ever since I was a very little girl. I love making cards, sending them and receiving them. It's probably safe to say that I have an addiction to cards as much as I have to genealogy now! I have gone so far as keeping most cards that have been given to me. I have gotten better, and I pick and choose what I keep now. I have created a system so it is not out of control! I hunted high and low for a file box that was pleasing to look at, currently it's a Victorian floral. I use a file folder with a label for each person. Those pretty file folders are what holds each precious card I keep. I can go back, read and look at each card and letter anytime. It feels as if I am with that person for a little while.

Cards are very important to me. I can remember as far back as the third grade when I penned a thank you card to my best friend Sandy's mom for letting me spend the night. It is said that Nita, who is like a second mom, still has that thank you note. I am going to ask her because I would love to see that one! I always gave a thank you card for the littlest things, or just a card to say hello ~ I am thinking of you ~ get well ~ any reason at all.

Christmas is the best time. Each day receiving a card is exciting and I look forward to opening it. I use a letter opener, never tearing the envelope! I write the date received on the card and when I responded. I know I am a bit weird, but I told you, I have a thing for cards.

I started out with store bought cards and added stickers, not the cutesy kind but Victorian die cut type of stickers. Then I went on to stamping and embossing, then I would do both! Now I try and make my own cards as time permits. I enjoy the "hands on" feel of the paper and personalizing the card to each person or event. I am slowly learning digi-scrapping as I would like to learn to do some cards on my computer.

I knew the ones I wanted to focus on were the ones from my Oma Lieselotte, my aunt Gitta, uncle Adi, and my cousin Marion ~~ all from Germany. As I was going thru the folders, I had many different emotions, I realized I hadn't visited these treasures in a long time, partly because my two twin uncles have passed, I miss them and life has just been busy. I am so glad I have kept all my cards.

Sadly, I don't have the year this card was made.

It was very difficult just to pick a few. There are so many beautiful cards to share that I could be here for a long time!

Advent Calendar ~ Day 3 ~ Christmas Tree Ornaments

Our tree always had traditional German ornaments, the most beautiful kind. Some glass, some handmade and very delicate. Mom (1933~2010) still has many from close to fifty years ago. I have several heirloom ornaments that have a very special meaning to me so I have chosen a few to share with you.

My Oma, Liselotte Haf née Kaiser-Saule, passed away the 5th of April 2010...these ornaments are truly a treasure more than ever.

My Oma, Lieselotte Haf, lived in Augsburg, Germany, made these wonderful walnut ornaments for me. Oma traveled every few years to California to visit us. During one of her visits she wanted to make some traditional walnut ornaments, the kind she made back home during tough times.

We bought a bag of walnuts, red yarn, and gold paint! Oma and I sat and carefully cracked open the walnuts so that we could glue the string inside, glue the walnut back together and paint them gold. That was 31 years ago this Christmas. I will never forget sharing this time with her, laughing as we would try not to crack the walnut shells into pieces! In mom's own words, "German's like handmade ornaments, nature type ornaments." I have cherished the walnut ornaments Oma made me and proudly put them on my tree each Christmas.

My aunt Gitta in Germany is an expert at "Kloppeln". It's not embroidery, it's not needlepoint, or cross stitch - it's German Lace Making. Aunt Gitta has her own style, but I can tell you it's amazing. Aunt Gitta has spent many hours making these beautiful heirlooms and I cherish each and every one of them she made for me.

Aunt Gitta has made several items for mom and for me over the years, the Christmas tree ornament is truly beautiful along with this Kloppeln doily that I use under my mini memory tree in my family room. My mini memory tree has photos of loved ones and ancestors passed. I always have a mini tree in my kitchen/family room, it use to have Christmas cookie cutters on it, now it holds photos as ornaments of those we want to remember and we miss so much.

This year, I have decided to do "Mom's Christmas Tree Jewels ~ Memory Count Down to share mom's Christmas tree ornaments that she collected over my lifetime and many that she gifted to me each Christmas. This year I have been blessed to own these beautiful ornaments and her lovely artificial tree. Click ~ here ~ to enjoy an ornament a day. Originally I was only going to post just up to Christmas day but I have decided to do it for the entire month of December . . . there are so many that I may have to double up but I want to visually document our Christmas memories for the generations to come.

Advent Calendar ~ Day 2 ~ Memories of our Holiday Foods~

Some of my favorite memories are of Mom (1933~2010) baking a ton of cookies. I remember that she would start baking early in November and then store them in tin containers until the Christmas holiday.

Cookies~

My favorite were mom's Spritz cookies - they were so good! In the last few years mom had added a few variations to her traditional spritz cookie. Knowing how much I love these cookies and chocolate, mom combined the two, dipping half of the spritz cookie in chocolate. Not only does it look good, but it was to die for!

Mom also made a crescent shaped hazelnut cookie with powdered sugar on top, everyone in my family loves the hazelnut cookies. Another cookie that comes to mind are her buttery sugar cookies. All of these recipes and more are in German in her own handwriting. Slowly, mom started to translate the recipes from German to English so that not only will I have them, but our holiday food traditions would continue to be handed down. Sadly, losing my Mom and my Grandmother (1913~2010) in 2010, only a few of the family recipes were translated. I am slowly working on getting the recipes translated into English. I am attempting to learn German and my cousin, Marion in Germany, is helping me through this interesting journey.

Breads and Cakes~

Mom also made a German bread called "Stollen" which consists of: candied fruit, nuts, raisins and marzipan. Sorry, not one of my favorites but very traditional. Of course there is my most favorite, great Oma Margarete's 'German Marble Cake'.

Christmas Packages from Germany~

Once mom and I were here in the states, my Oma would send us a Christmas package every year. It was always exciting because she would send foods that mom was used to having and what I grew to love. Oma always sent the kidney shaped chocolate liquors which is a hard dark chocolate shell on the outside, filled with Brandy on the inside, these are now available at stores like "Trader Joes". You had to pop the entire candy in your mouth or Brandy would drip all over. As a child, I was only allowed one or two of these and I still remember how good they were and thinking how grown-up I got to be!

Dinners

I don't recall this dinner, however, mom said that the traditional holiday dinner that was cooked was a goose. What I recall of our holiday dinner was a roast with potato balls, smothered in her German gravy. For as far back as I can remember, mom had made the potato balls from scratch. Potato balls are very labor intensive as mom got older, she started to use a German packaged potato ball mix named "Phanni". They are still very good, but not as good as mom's homemade. The store bought mix method was much easier on mom, this allowed her to spend more time with family and I was all for that.

I truly miss mom's Christmas cookies and the wonderful dinner she would always prepare at Christmas but I have so many amazing memories to sustain me and my family ~ I thank mom and Oma for the very special and magical Christmas memories a girl could have.

Advent Calendar ~ Our Christmas Trees

Each and every Christmas tree I have ever had in my life has been decorated in true German tradition and was always beautifully done by my mom!

Until mom and I came to the U.S., our tree was not put up until Christmas Eve. In true German tradition, the tree is not put up until then. The "living room" in German homes usually have doors attached and can be locked. On Christmas Eve, mom and Oma would be up late decorating our live tree so it would be ready for Christmas morning. Back then they even used real candles! Can you imagine doing that now! Once the tree was complete, the doors would be locked and not opened until Christmas morning! Sadly, I do not have any photos of those trees.

Once here in the U.S., mom became a little "Americanized". She would always put up a beautiful tall full live tree just after Thanksgiving all the way up to her passing away . . . I am attempting to continue this tradition now . Mom was a master at decorating the Christmas tree as well as the entire house, her trees are amazing! I had always said to her, you should have worked for Macy's as their Christmas window display decorator.

Until recently, we both have always had live 'Noble Fir' trees in our own homes. Both mom and I turned to artificial trees, to see them you can not even tell they are fake, especially with mom's touch.

Mom has German ornaments that are close to 50 years old. Now they have been passed down to me and they are on my tree today. I have the last of the real lead tinsel from Germany. I don't use it on my tree because of our little grand kids, but the individual strands are very heavy! Each tree would have over 2000 lights with angel hair in-between the branches.

Each year, I learned more and more from my beautiful mom on how to decorate the tree, but I know my tree will never be as amazing as hers. Each year mom would give me more ornaments and my tree would get prettier and prettier! Now, I will proudly be the keeper of the heirloom ornaments that has been passed down to me. I do miss a real tree smell, but mom's artificial tree is just as beautiful and I can leave it up as long as I like. I don't have as many lights on my tree as mom had on hers, but that's ok, less to take down! We are all decorated here, ready for Christmas and enjoying the beauty of my Christmas tree.

I always loved going home to mom's for Christmas . She would have two trees, one in the family room and one in the formal living room and would always be anxious to see them. Christmas was always special at mom's and I would feel like a kid again and it's as if you were walking into a home in Germany. Now that mom has passed, I am hoping to keep her Christmas traditions and memories alive . . . she is all around us and I just sit and absorb the beauty of it all.

My grandfather: Adalbert Haf, 1907 ~ 1968, he did not serve in the U.S. but he served in the German Mtn. Rangers and was shot in the arm/shoulder during WWII. He loved serving. Also in the photos with my grandfather is my Aunt Inge (the mother of my cousin Pete Kaps in photo to the right) and my Oma, Lieselotte Haf 1913 ~ 2010.

My cousin Pete Kaps (3rd on the right) served in the U.S. Army. Enlisted 28 May 1975, as private E-1. Made E-5 (Sgt) after 2.5 years. Cousin Pete's ETS date was 26 May 1978. He was E-5 (Sgt) when he left the service with an honorable discharge. He was a helicopter crewchief on a UH-1H Huey Helicopter. Pete and I just re-connected after 30 years! Love my cousin Pete!

My father, John Adam Eimes 1931 ~ 1997, in the two photos on the bottom to the left, he served in the U.S. Army and was part of the Korean War, also wounded.

My Uncle, James Eimes (my father's brother) 1924 ~ 1989, served in the U.S. Army.

Today, one-hundred and seventeen years ago, Emilie Haf nee Schallhammer (1871-1944), married my maternal great-grandfather, Adalbert Haf (1868-1952) on the 21st of October, in 1894 in Pfronten, Ostallgau, Bayern, Germany. My grandfather, Adalbert Haf (1907-1968) was one of the 19 children, our Emilie and Adalbert gave birth to . . . several had passed away early on, and some of the boys had died in WWII. I have so little information on Emilie and some of the children. My beautiful mom (1933-2010) and I were just getting into the history of our Haf family and this portrait, before she passed. I am researching and asking as many questions as I can with my only living Aunt in Germany, my uncle's wife.

Both passed before I was born so I never had the opportunity to get to know either great-grandparent. As far as I know, this is the only photo I have of, Oma Emilie.

Because many of my grandfather's siblings had passed or were in the military...not all are shown in this family portrait. The two framed photos sitting on the floor in front of my great aunt Fannie, and my great grandfather, are my great-great grandparents, Mathias (1839-1902) and Franziska (nee Behringer) Haf (1838-1900)...the only portraits I know that exist of them. I do not have all of the names of my ancestors in this photo. There are names written on the back but a bit confusing as to who is who and for several, there is no name at all, so I am working on identifying each ancestor correctly (hopefully). The two adults sitting and to the right in the photo, are cousins of my great grandfather (sadly, no names).

The Haf family portrait is very large and would not fit on my 8.5 x 11 Canon scanner, so I used my Flip-Pal Mobile Scanner and stitched the portrait together...because of my Flip-Pal, I am now able to scan and share several photos I have in my collection.

The special commemorative shield designed for San Diego County First Responders Firefighters, Police Officers, and Port of Authority, in the photo above, is being worn over my husbands heart on his Police uniform for the month of September, remembering each day what our country went through and those we lost and in memory of 9-11.

The Commemorative 9-11 Badge

Many other agencies wanted to join in the 9-11 project but the time frame to manufacture the badges was quickly closing. That lead to the realization. Every police and fire agency across America should be afforded the same opportunity. Starting in 2012, we will be asking police and fire agencies across the United States to join in a national project. We want to provide our EMS brethren the same opportunity EMS personnel had in San Diego in 2011.

The national badge will be designed so it can be used year after year. Each year additional police and fire agencies will sign up for the 9-11 project. Our goal is to eventually have every police and fire/rescue agency in the United States wearing the same optional badge for the month of September.

He served as a prototype nuclear plant instructor from 1970 until 1973 when he was selected for the Naval Enlisted Scientific Education Program. He earned his bachelor's degree and a master's degree in nuclear engineering from Purdue University in 1977. He was then commissioned as an ensign in the U.S. Navy in 1977. James was hand selected by Admiral Hyman G. Rickover for duty at Naval Reactors ( a joint program of the Department of the Navy and the Department of Energy) with cradle-to-grave responsibility for the reactors aboard all U.S. naval nuclear-powered warships. He retired from the Navy in 1989.

The Peace of Augsburg ~

Today, on August 8th, in Augsburg, Germany, the city that my mom and I were born in . . . annually celebrates the Peace of Augsburg.

The Augsburg Peace Festival is a public holiday in Augsburg. Post Offices, Banks, stores, and most businesses are closed. This public holiday is celebrated only in Augsburg and not throughout the rest of Germany.

The celebration is held in the Rathaus Platz, a shopping mall, next to City Hall. If you like, you can watch the festivities on this live web cam, keep in mind, Augsburg is nine hours ahead. As I prepared this post, I watched as workers were busy setting up for the festivities.

The Peace of Augsburg, was a treaty established in September 25, 1555, between Charles V and the forces of the Schmalkaldic League at the imperial city of Augsburg, Germany, present day, Bavaria, Germany. This treaty officially ended the struggle between two religious groups.

The Peace allowed the German princes to choose between the Lutheran or Catholic faith within the domains they controlled. Subjects, citizens, or residents that did not conform to the prince's choice, were given a period to migrate freely to different regions where their chosen religion was accepted. On August 8th, 1629, Protestants were banned from practicing their faith in the city. The Peace of Westphalia reinstated the Augsburg Declaration of Religious Freedom in 1648. The first Augsburg Peace Festival was held on August 8th, in 1650.

As I gleaned the information about this wonderful German city I was born in, it is my hopes that one day I can muster the courage to fly back to Augsburg (I do not like to fly!). I have deep roots in Augsburg with living family members there, it would also be an incredible experience to research my ancestry in this beautiful historic city. Augsburg was founded in 15 BC, making Augsburg, Germany's third oldest city. I do recall mom telling me that you can still see the remains of the moat that surrounded the city centuries ago.

When I was thirteen years old, mom and I visited Augsburg and celebrated Christmas with my Oma, Opa, great-grandmother, cousins, aunts and uncles . . . it was an experience of a lifetime. I visited the Perlachtrum, a bell tower that was built in 989, originally a watchtower. Today, you can see the Perlachtrum on the live web cam and the city getting ready for the Peace of Augsburg Festival and feel as if you are there.

The print of old Augsburg, was given to me, the keeper of our family memories and records, by my Oma in Germany, when I was in my early twenties . . . this print, proudly hangs in my home today. The print is quite large so I used my Flip Pal Mobile Scanner and then used the "stitching" tool to resize it for posting here.

Since I had already submitted my, Past and Present photo for the challenge on my Our Life in Photos by Ginisology blog in Dear Photograph style, I also wanted to join in on the "genea-heirheads" Saturday fun here . . . . so, if you are up for a fun challenge (and it was a challenge), your mission, if you decided to accept is to:

An Old Fashion 4th of July ~

To celebrate Independence day today, our family attended An Old-Fashioned Fourth of July celebration in a neighboring quaint community by the name of, Poway, the city in the country. We had a great time and I couldn't think of a better way for the grandchildren to learn and visualize the olden days.

We took a tour of the Nelson Family home (built in 1918) that was moved from it's original location in 1991 to this historic park for preservation. We watched a mock train robbery, rode the steam engine train, witnessed a cannon fired, blacksmith demonstrate iron making, beautiful quilt displays, men and women dressed in period Civil War uniforms and clothing, free crafts and games for kids . . . all to celebrate America's Birthday.

Every Wednesday, The Breckenridge News, and it's eight seven-column pages would provide a mix of local community and political news, a sampling of broad general interest stories, and opinion pieces by local columnists. John D. Babbage, the owner, started The Breckenridge News on July 22, 1876 and continued publication until his death in 1934. His daughter, Mildred Babbage, took over the paper as editor until her death in 1949. The paper was then taken over by W.G. Polk, the grandson of John D. Babbage, ending one year later. Miss Nannie Ryan, of Pisgah, was here shopping last Tuesday.
Curtis Pate was the guest of Miss Mayme Seaton last Sunday.
Wick Pate and Nat Taul sold to Clark Owen last week a fine flock of lambs.
Mr. and Mrs. James Furrow were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Taul last Sunday.
Wm Tabeling and two daughters of Wichita, Kan., are here visiting friends and relatives.
Misses Maggie, Lillie and Minnie Bates, of Pisgah, were the guests of their aunt Mrs. Samuel Taul, last week.
Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Hawkins visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Pate, at Cloverport last Saturday and Sunday.
Mrs. Milly Pate, who has been visiting her grand-daughter, Mrs. Alfred Hawkins, and other relatives, has returned home.
Mrs. Samuel Taul left last Saturday for Hites Run, where she will visit her daughter, Mrs. John Elder, and other relatives.
Every farmer should hear the speech of H. B. Sherman, national organizer of the American Society of Equity. He will speak at the Fourth of July picnic given by W. N. Pate, John O'Riley, Huse Alexander and Jubal Hook at Hardinsburg.

Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Tabeling, of Wichita, Kas., are visiting relatives here. Mr. Tabeling is a Breckenridge county boy who went to Wichita a few years ago, and married a Wichita lady some months since.

Remembering H. Keith Tiffany and Ronald R. Ebeltoft ~

"Patrolman Tiffany and Patrolman Ronald Ebeltoft were shot and killed after responding to a dispute between two neighbors over the placement of a rose bush. During the dispute one of the men assaulted the other. As both officers were standing outside of the suspect’s home the man snuck up behind them and opened fire with an assault rifle, killing both officers." ~ San Diego Police Historical Association

My husband had introduced his sister to Keith, they fell in love and were married just a short time after meeting each other...they were only married for six months when Keith was taken.

It was a very sad day as we lost both Keith and his partner Ronald R. Ebeltoft. Keith and Ron are buried right next to each other.

Roy Pate, the eight year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Pate, died May 14 and was buried the following day in the Pisgah grave yard. He was a well informed boy for one of his age and had a splendid disposition. His last words were "Lord take me." Though he said he hated to leave his loved ones, he was willing to do God's will.

Tom Tabeling, wife and baby, of Ruth, were recent visitors in this Neighborhood. He sold his home interest while here to his sister Dorris.

So far, this is the only photo I have come across of us together and me in my Easter bonnet, new dress, and new shiny black shoes . . . usually they were white.

Today, the 25th day of March in 1925, my paternal great aunt, Virginia 'Ginny' Lee Ijames, becomes the wife of John A. Probst, in Clark's County, Indiana.

According to the 1930 "Crews of Vessels" Fifteenth Census of the United States, in the city of Pittsburgh, PA...both great-aunt Ginny and uncle John were part of the crew of a sea vessel (five different vessel names listed on census)...great-aunt Ginny was a cook, and uncle John, a seaman. At least they were able to be together, as they had only been married for five years at the time of this census.

Len Weatherholt had a very painful arm, the result of breaking the member falling while attempting to carry a heavy stick of wood.

Remembering Susan Ida Ryan ~ 1872-1964 ~

Susan Ida (Ryan) Tabeling, passed away forty-seven years ago today. Susan is the wife (1895) of my great grand uncle, Charles Tabeling (1873-1959) and brother to my great grandfather Albert Fritz Tabeling (1870-1919). Susan and Charles had ten children, Ruth Tabeling Keenan, was the the last child to be born (1916) and the last child to pass away on, 14 July 2008 at the Hardin Memorial Hospital in Elizabethtown, Kentucky.

Susan passed away in Breckinridge Co., Kentucky in 1964, and is buried in the Ryan family cemetery in Breckinridge Co., Kentucky.

Emilie (Schallhammer) Haf (1871-1944) was born on this day in 1871, in Munchen, Bayern, Germany. Emilie married my maternal great-grandfather, Adalbert Haf (1868-1952) on the 21st of October, in 1894 in Pfronten, Ostallgau, Bayern, Germany. My grandfather, Adalbert Haf (1907-1968) was one of 19 children...several had passed away, and some of the boys had died in WWII. I have so little information on Emilie and the children. Mom and I were just getting into the history of our Haf family and this portrait before she passed. I am researching and asking as many questions as I can with my only living Aunt in Germany, my uncle's wife.

Both passed before I was born so I never had the opportunity to get to know either great-grandparent. As far as I know, this is the only photo I have of Emilie. I cropped her photo from this family portrait that mom had brought back from Germany, when my Oma passed.

Because many of my grandfather's siblings had passed or were in the military...not all are shown in this family portrait. The two framed photos sitting on the floor in front of my great aunt Fannie, and my great grandfather, are my great-great grandparents, Mathias (1839-1902) and Franziska (Behringer) Haf (1838-1900)...the only portraits I know that exist of them. I do not have all of the names of my ancestors in this photo. There are names written on the back but a bit confusing as to who is who and for several, there is no name at all, so I am working on identifying each ancestor correctly (hopefully). The two adults sitting and to the right in the photo, are cousins of my great grandfather (sadly, no names).

The family portrait is very large and would not fit on my 8.5 x 11 Canon scanner, so I used my Flip-Pal Mobile Scanner and stitched the portrait together...because of my Flip-Pal, I am now able to scan and share several photos I have in my collection.

The Marriage and Will of William Iiams ~ Our Immigrant Ancestor ~

Today, in 1663/64, William Iiams married Elizabeth Cheyney (1652 - Aft. 1726), daughter of Richard and Charity (unknown) Cheney, in Anne Arundel Co., MD. Chaneysville, Pennsylvania, was named after Dr. Richard Chaney.

It is said that my 7th great-grandfather, William Iiams, was born about 1640 in England. It is believed that his father was from Wales and that he, William, immigrated to America.

It is also said that William Iiams (Eyoms), settled in South River Hundred of Anne Arundel County, Maryland. He is not recorded in the "List of Early Maryland Settlers." There is no record of his financing his own passage, being transported by another or his coming in as an indentured servant. Since the name had been spelled phonetically, there is always the possibility that the early records were written incorrectly or misplaced. There is no record of his filing a claim for land rights and all extant records style him as a freeholder. Besides the deed of gift from his father-in-law, records indicate at his death that he had other plantations. [1]

It appears that he married in Anne Arundel County, Maryland to Elizabeth Cheyney [Cheney] when she was just 16 years old. There were the parents of seven children:

Charles Iiams [1667-1673] which no documentation has been found that he is a child of these parents.
William Iiams [1670-1736] married Elizabeth Yates Plummer
Richard Iiams - [Abt. 1673-1761] married twice, first to Anne Cheney, his cousin and second to Elizabeth Gaither
Susanna Iiams [between 1674-1680 died before 1753]
Elizabeth Iiams [Aft. 1675- Aft. 1741]
George Iiams [1676-1763]
Hester 'Esther' "the romantic" Iiams [1679-Abt. 1760]

It is believed that he was living in South River Hundred as early as 1665 and he became an important member of the community. The present town of Ijamesville in Frederick county establishes the importance of the family in that section.[2] He was called a 'planter' which was the term given by the British to 'farmers.'

Date of Will: November 10, 1703

   Bequeathed to his son, William and daughter Elizabeth, five shilling each. To Richard, 100 acres of land near the Patuxent River in Prince George's County; and to George, 100 acres on the north side of Western Run. To his wife Elizabeth, her dower rights. To Richard, George, Hestor and Susannah, the residue of the estate. He mentions his daughter Hestor.

   His Widow was the executrix of the estate and she filed an account upon the estate on February 7, 1706/07, reporting a balance of 37/8/4 pounds.

In "Iams of America: Landed Gentry of America" edited by Ralph Reynolds, M.D. - Ann Ijams Callahan is of the theory that the William was a native of Whitstone, England, and that he journey [sic] first to Boston before settling in Anne Arundel Co., Maryland. Further, Anne felt that their William Ijams may have been a grandson of Robert Ijams, Esquire, Master of Ordinance to Queen Elizabeth; member of Privy council of Ireland; formerly in charge of a combined military and civil board that managed all matters concerning artillery, engineers, and material of the army.

On July 14, 1996, I (Roberta Iiames) wrote to Lois Hartman in California asking questions on some of the genealogy in her book, "Rememered in This Land". She was quite kind in answering my letter and making some necessary corrections. She also commented in the letter, "I am embarrassed that Page 68 in my booklet was not corrected in proofs! Please delete the page and use this [she enclosed a corrected page] mimeo sheet if you will. Also, on page 19 re: the tomb in Westminster Abbey. I now believe that the name was "James" & not "Ijams" altho I'd heard the comment from several sources I's and J's were interchangeable then & led to this probable error. It was most interesting research nonetheless!

Note: The origin of this distinctive family has been the subject of such and varied contention. Claims of Dutch, Flemish, Scottish and Welsh have all been suggested. The progenitor, William Iiams, was a native Britisher, as no record exists of his naturalization in Maryland. A descendant after extensive travel and research in Britian has revealed the fact that it is Cornish and the Maryland orthography is a corruption of the ancient I'ans of County Cornwell. The family I'ans was seated in the time of Henry VIII in the Parish of Stratton, Cornwell. Arms were issued to Robert I'ans of Whitstone by Elizabeth, her Master of Or dance and Her Majesty's Privy Council in Ireland. The family Pedigree in the County Record Office of Cornwall, who died in 1816, although he left married daughters who did not carry down the name. Col. I'ans served as His Majesty's Justice of the Peace for Cornwall and Devon. The 13th century accounts of the Earldom of Cornwall contain such family names as Ian, Ians, Iane, Iannes, etc. The Maryland family always pronounced their name as one syllable. [Ref. William Iiams [or Eyoms] made oath in court in Maryland that he was the son of Sir Robert I'ans, Chief of Ordinance for the Queen, and Quartermaster General. this description sufficiently identifies him as Sir Robert Innes who is listed in the British records as having married Lady Grizel Stewart, daughter of the Earl of Murray. [By Elisha B. Iiams, S.A.R, A.O.P., W.C.H.S., U.O.V.G.A, N.Y.G.B.S Life Member].

My maternal grandfather, Adalbert Haf was born on this day in 1907. Opa, was one of 19 children born to Adalbert (1868-1952) and Emilie 'Schallhammer' (1871-1944) Haf, in Germany.

Remembering Opa ~ Adalbert Haf 1907 ~ 1968

I was only three years old when we left Germany and I remember very little about my Opa, Adalbert Haf, born, 27 Feb. 1907 and passed away on 09 Feb. 1968.

I do remember where I was and what I was doing, the day mom received the white envelope with the black border around it from Germany, announcing his death. I felt that closeness we shared in my heart, that my brain could not remember. I am the keeper of that announcement, and of all his photos now.

Mom had shared many stories with me about how very close Opa and I were up until mom and I left Germany, when I was three. He didn't want us to leave. I was stuck to him like glue, as he was with me, and would hang out with him in his workshop. I had my own set of tools that matched his, and if he hit his thumb with the hammer...so did I! And when he hit his thumb and cursed in German...so did I! Mom had said that no one would ever forget that one.

Opa was a German Mountain Trooper in Russia, during WWII. His military career ended when he was shot in the shoulder. When I was at the age of 13, Mom and I traveled back to Augsburg, Germany, our home town, for a four week visit...I do remember the wonderful times Opa and I had together...that was the last time I saw him before he passed.

Tombstone Tuesday and birth of Beal Ijams 1767 ~ 1855

Today, in 1767, Beal Ijams, who is my paternal 4th great grandfather, is born in Anne Arundel Co., MD. to John (1725-1781/7?) and Ariana (Worthington) Iiams (1729-1781).

After the death of his father [1781] but other records indicate 1787? he moved to Iredell Co., N.C. with some of his brothers and his half-sister who had married Capt. Basil Gaither.

He built a log house in the area of North Carolina where he had settled. He owned land and also had slaves. According to Harry Wright Newman, after the settlement of Carolina the orthography of the name changes from 'Iiames' to 'Ijames' and in the early court records it is written simply as 'Jams'.

In 1836, Davie County was organized out of the northern portion of Rowan county and the plantation of Beal Ijames fell into the newly created county. At the 1850 census for Davie county, Beal Ijames was aged 85 years, born in Maryland, with the following dwelling in his household: Matilda Ijames, aged 54; Denton Ijames, Constable, aged 37.

Fritz Tabeling went to Hardinsburg Wednesday.

Mrs. Lena Beavin, of Kirk, visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Dunn also her sister, Mrs. Frank Tabeling Sunday.

Albert "Fritz" Tabeling (1870-1919) is my paternal great grandfather...Lena Beavin, would be related to Lillie Mae (Pate) Tabeling (1879-1919), my great grandmother and wife of Albert Tabeling, through Lillie Mae's mother, Delila Beavin (researching birth & death dates) is my 2nd great grandmother. Mrs. Frank Tabeling, Nellie Elizabeth (Dunn) Tabeling (1882-1969), wife of my great grand uncle, Joseph "Frank" Tabeling (1876-1939).

Lillie Mae and Albert Tabeling, my Great Grandmother and Great Grandfather. Lillie Mae died from a miscarriage complicated by the flu, and Albert died along with several of thier children, from the 1919 Flu Epidemic in Cloverport, Kentucky.

Charles A. Tabeling ~ 1873 ~ 1959

Today, marks fifty-two years, my paternal great uncle Charles A. Tabeling, passed away. Charles, would be the 5th child out of eleven children born to John Henry and Augusta (Oelze) Tabeling, and the brother to my great grandfather, Albert Fritz Tabeling (1870~1919).

Charles married Susan Ida Ryan in 1895, in Cloverport, Breckinridge Co., Kentucky, they had ten children.

I have several day-to-day newspaper clips from THE BRECKINRIDGE NEWS, on the comings and goings of the Tabeling and Pate families. I would like to post these "going ons" in an "on this day" calendar as much as possible, that coincides with our current day.

I have only acquired a small amount of these one or two liner day-to-day "going-ons"-- but I am having quite a bit of fun researching and browsing through, learning about the life and times of my Ancestors'.

Even though we have passed the 11th of January, in my great uncle Charles memory, I am posting one of my favorite "going-ons" that is related to him, today...

Photo of the Charles Tabeling family, was given to me electronically from my distant cousin, W. Armstrong who is a direct descendant of the Ryan family. It is said the owner of the original photo may be, Perry Ryan. I also learned of the daily going-ons in The Breckinridge News of our Tabeling and Pate family line from my cousin, W. Armstrong...thank you!

Sadly, I do not know the names of each child in the above photo...since I don't have a possible date or year of this photo...it is difficult and will take time to figure out the approximate ages of the children. Charles A. Tabeling is standing and holding his cane, his wife, Susan Ida Ryan, is seated next to him with one of their children in her lap. Charles and Susan owned their own farm, near Glen Dean, KY.

Ginisology ~ my 2nd Blogiversary ~

Today marks the second year for Ginisology! It went by fast and so much in my family history took place in 2010.

I have only been researching and working on my family history for three years now, and actually, in reality only two years...I am not going to count 2010, because I really wasn't able to spend alot of time doing actual research on my family.

With the loss of my Oma, (Grandmother), Liselotte Haf, and my Beautiful mom within several months of each other, daily life, and grandchildren. . .blogging took a back seat. Needless to say, it was a very tough year for so many of us. It was very difficult to want to blog. Aside from that, in order to blog about our Ancestors and family history, one needs to have the information, history and the stories to document and share on ones blog.

My plan for 2011, God willing, is to really buckle down and do some serious researching, to discover and learn about my Ancestors and the lives they lived...then, I will be able to blog about our family history. To honor and keep their memories alive and to have it "written and noted" for future generations that may have an interest in knowing all about us.

I have come a long way since I first started my blogging journey. My reasons for doing my genealogy have become stronger and much more passionate and serious, I have set goals that I want to accomplish. I even created another blog, Remembering This Day in Our History that holds and creates a timeline of the birthdays', deaths', and anniversaries of my ancestors past. I had first seen this timeline/calendar idea over at Vickie's, On this date....blog and thought it was a wonderful way to learn and get to know our Ancestors, thank you Vickie for the inspiration!

I love reading ALL the wonderful genealogy blogs out there, I have learned so much from fellow bloggers who are so supportive and helpful, I could not have done it without you...and treasured friendships have been made...thank you. So, here's to buckling down and getting busy with my own family history and to blog for our family.

As I said in my Blogiversary post last year....

Thank you all for your help, support and friendships, here's to many more years to keeping up the search and posting about our journeys and about the Ancestors that brought us here.

And to me, the keeper of our memories...Happy Blogiversary Ginisology!

The Next Exit!

I just received my new and updated 2011 edition, of the
best traveling companion a genealogy/family history researcher could have. It is definitely a must have and well worth it's weight in gold.

I had to share this wonderful tool with you that I have been using since 2008. I keep The Next Exit in my car and it has come in handy so many times. When I took my first genealogy research trip from California to Kentucky in April of 2008, The Next Exit was a lifesaver and I wouldn't travel without it now. Even up to Los Angeles, which is only an hour and a half away, this book comes in handy.

It has every exit in every state, and this book will tell you what is at each exit, i.e. food, gas, camping, lodging, restaurants, hospitals, shopping and will tell you if there are any exits under construction. I only wish cemeteries, libraries and family history centers were also listed...hmmm...may have to suggest that to the makers of this great book!

This exit directory, does exactly what it's purpose is intended to do. As we would choose our exit according to the directory, the facilities that were listed were actually right where they said they were! It sure saved us time and gas (as it says on the cover!) I am not sure why I didn't think to share this sooner, but after receiving it today...I knew that it would be so helpful to so many of us that travel all over for our research. The user guide is very friendly...in fact, I didn't even need to use it, that's how easy this directory is to use.

Today, my great aunt Ginny would have been 116 years old! I sure wish

I could have met her...Happy Birthday aunt Ginny!

The information I have on my great aunt Ginny is very little. I found a 1930 "Crews of Vessels" census report for Pittsburgh, PA, ruminated on April 7, 11, and the 14th, in 1930, where aunt Ginny was a cook for the ship (ship names are hard to read) and her husband John A. Probst (1897 ~ 1967) who was a seaman on the same ship. They had tied the knot on March 25th, 1925

A little Christmas cheer from my home to yours ~

The Christmas tree that stands so beautiful and tall, adorned with ornaments as old as I am...belonged to my beautiful mom. I recently inherited her family room tree (artificial ) and ornaments. At first, it was difficult but as I continued to decorate for the holidays...I felt surrounded by her and all Christmas things she loved so much. I have to say, it feels good, and I think now the hard part will be having to take it all down.

I also inherited only part of her Thomas Kincade Christmas Village collection...there are many more pieces to the collection I hope to own someday. It's a beautiful village and each time I look at it...I smile and mom warms my heart and I know she is here with our family.

In memory of my Uncle Helmut Haf ~

Today, the 20th day of December is the anniversary of the death of my maternal uncle Helmut. Uncle Helmut was an identical twin to his brother, Adalbert Haf ~ 3 Oct. 1940 ~ 2 October 2004.

Uncle Helmut and uncle Adalbert died of the same disease exactly ten years apart. Their deaths have been very hard on our family...we miss you both. You can not mention one without the other.

Happy Birthday to my Oma, Lieselotte Haf ~ 1913 ~ 2010

Today, my (maternal grandmother) Oma Lieselotte Kaiser-Saule Haf (1913 ~ 2010) would have been 97 years old. Oma was born in Zurich, Switzerland. What a wonderful day that was ~ Happy Birthday Oma, we love and miss you!

Oma grew up and resided in Augsburg, Germany all of her life - very close to the town hall centre shown on the Christmas card above and in this live web cam (Christmas Market is closed at the time of this posting) of the Rathaus Plaza and Christmas Market. Augsburg is nine hours ahead ~ when the market is open, it's absolutely beautiful to watch.

Advent Calendar ~ Ancestor Tags ~

I chose to use the "Grab Bag" day in the Advent Calender of Christmas Memories, for my handmade Ancestor tags, and share them with you here today. I have been working on them for several weeks now. Even though there are many more Ancestors to do, I am at a stopping point for this Christmas.

I have always had a little tree with a cute little burlap bottom for Christmas (purchased at my local craft store) on my kitchen counter for many years. I would adorn this little tree with Christmas cookie cutters and lights. Some of the Christmas shaped cookie cutters once belonged to mom and she had given them to me for the kids.

I loved it and it always made my kitchen bright and sweet...the kids would smile when they saw it! I plan on getting another little tree, continue my tradition and decorate the little tree with cookie cutters...giving me two sweet little trees in my kitchen.

I didn't like the size or that "store bought look" but at least I could honor my loved ones on the tree right away. I had always wanted to make my own tags and last year I had shared the idea with a fellow blogger, Tammy, over at Rosie Cotton. Tammy liked the idea then, so this year she contacted me asking if I had done them and to check hers out. Tammy's came out beautiful and she motivated me to get started on mine.

It has been hard for me to get motivated this year because I now have to add my beautiful mom and Oma. I just couldn't get myself started but I knew I needed to. I got together with my neighbor Claire. . .she really helped me to push myself and get the creative juices flowing!

Between Claire and Tammy, I finally did get my tags done and I am very happy with them. So...thank you Tammy and Claire for supporting me in a project that I have wanted to do for over a year now!

I decided to place my Ancestor tree in my family tree corner which is very near my kitchen and can be seen from just about every angle. It's a perfect spot I must say.

The suggestion has been made to keep them up all year...I am tossing that idea around. I just need to come up with something to hold my tags and honor my Ancestors. Maybe a tree branch (finished and stained), I am not sure. If any of you come up with any ideas...let me know, I am open to suggestions! I think it's a great way to keep our loved ones who have passed, visually close to us all year.
