Today, we are remembering my paternal great-aunt Virginia 'Jenny' Probst née Ijames, on what would have been her 128th birthday. I never had the privilege of meeting her but I am honored to have been named after her and her niece, my aunt Virginia 'Ginnie' Eimes.  We have a lot of "Virginia's" in our family. 

  

1902 ~ Richard Denton Ijames Death ~

In 1902, on Oct 19th, my paternal two times great-grandfather, Richard Denton Ijames, died of asthma in his home in Owensboro, Kentucky, and leaving his wife, Marjorie Ellen (Lovell) a widow with eight children.

   Richard D. Ijames died of asthma at his home on Walnut street at 5:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon. He was one of the oldest citizens of Owensboro and resided here continuously for more than fifty years. Mr. Ijames was born near Gallatin, Sumner county, Tenn., September 15, 1829, and grew to manhood there. In 1851 he removed with his father to Owensboro, and shortly thereafter he was married to Miss Ellen Lovell.
   The deceased is survived by his wife and eight children, all of whom are grown. The funeral will be conducted from the home tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock and the remains will be interred in Elmwood.

On this day, 200 years ago, my paternal 3rd great-grand uncle, Denton Ijames was born in Rowan, North Carolina. Denton was the son of  Beale Ijams (1767 - 1855) and Elizabeth Ijams nee Little (1770-1848), my paternal fourth great-grandparents.

Happy Birthday, uncle Denton . . . and on this same day, birthday wishes to your 3rd great-granddaughter, my 5th cousin, Elizabeth Denton M. . . . and birthday wishes to my 2nd great-grandfather, Richard Denton Ijames (1829-1902) . . . Happy Birthday to you all!

Happy Anniversary, to Great Aunt Ginny & Uncle John Probst ~

Today, the 25th day of March in 1925, my paternal great aunt, Virginia 'Ginny' Lee Ijames, becomes the wife of John A. Probst, in Clark's County, Indiana.

According to the 1930 "Crews of Vessels" Fifteenth Census of the United States, in the city of Pittsburgh, PA...both great-aunt Ginny and uncle John were part of the crew of a sea vessel (five different vessel names listed on census)...great-aunt Ginny was a cook, and uncle John, a seaman. At least they were able to be together, as they had only been married for five years at the time of this census.

I could have met her...Happy Birthday aunt Ginny!

The  information I have on my great aunt Ginny is very little. I found a 1930 "Crews of Vessels" census report for Pittsburgh, PA, ruminated on April 7, 11, and the 14th, in 1930, where aunt Ginny was a cook for the ship (ship names are hard to read) and her husband John A. Probst (1897 ~ 1967) who was a seaman on the same ship. They had tied the knot on March 25th, 1925

I have been away for a bit, my grandmother "Oma" passed away on April 5th, 2010 and the death of several close friends: my neighbor Kevin and a very close friend, Carmen. It's been a very sad time for our family this past month. Hopefully, I will be able to get back on track and post the names of the slaves in our family history. I left off with the first part of the 2nd Generation, below, is part two of the 2nd Generation.

Generation No. 1

Generation No. 2 - part one

In my family history I have the names of the slaves that were on my 5th great grandfather, Beal IJAMES plantation. I will be posting five generations of the descendants of: John Wesley IJAMES, a slave on the Beal IJAMES plantation. Being that there is quite a bit of information, I have decided that each generation will be an individual post and I will attempt to post at least once to twice a week . The information I have will be posted exactly as I had received it. I feel it is extremely important to get what information I have on the slaves in my family history out there in hopes to helping another.

I want it to be known that I am not the researcher of this information. My dear friend Roberta and her husband Guy who I am a very distant cousin to, has spent the last 40 years researching the IJAMES family history. Any and all credit goes to this wonderful lady who spent hours, days, years compiling our family's history. Roberta has given me a gift of a lifetime, one I have no idea or way of thanking her properly for. Without Roberta's help and support, I would not have the information I am about to give to you or the information on my direct IJAMES/EIMES line. Thank you Roberta, you are amazing.

My 5th great grandfather Beal IJAMES 08 February 1767 ~ 06 July 1855, was a slave master and owner of the Beal IJAMES Plantation, located in Mocksville, North Carolina.

It is said that Beal IJAMES did not believe in selling his slaves and making sure that those slaves at the IJAMES Plantation had a good life. I am so glad for that. Reading this, I was relieved and felt that my Beal IJAMES was a decent man.

World War I Registration Draft Card for Slave descendant ~ John Wesley Ijames ~

The Draft Registration Card shown here belongs to John Wesley Ijames, born on the 7th day of April 1900, in Mocksville, North Carolina, and died on the 27th day of October 1976. John is the great-grandson to John Wesley Ijames, b. between 1810 - 1812, (d. unknown at this time) a Slave on the Beal Ijames Plantation. Beal Ijames is my 4th great grandfather.  

As I was doing research on the Ijames family surname I came across this document on Ancestry.com...I was very excited to find this document as it confirms the information I had received. What is so wonderful is to actually see John Wesley Ijames signature on the card along with his father's name, also a confirmation as to the information I have. 

The first wife of (name unknown at this time) John Wesley Ijames, predeceased him, he then married: Lossie HUTCHINSON CLINKSCALE b. 05 Jun 1903, Abberville, Co., South Carolina; d. 15 Jan 1963, Winston-Salem, Forsyth Co., North Carolina (Source: North Carolina Death collection 1908-1996, Reg. Notes for WINFIELD BROOKS 'SLAVE' IJAMES:

On page 227, Item 783 Ijames, Brooks Legacy, the writer Dorothy Graham of Mocksville, N.C. sates [sic], "Through her search she found that William Imes and wife Elizabeth Jones were Scottish. They came to the United States from Scotland and settled in Maryland [the year unknown]. They migrated south to Davie Co., and had a son named Peter Ney Imes, who was a Napoleon General and also a school teacher. Peter told thier father that their last name was misspelled and thereafter, Imes became spelled Ijames. When Peter died, he was buried near Salisbury, N.C.

     Mr. and Mrs. William Ijames had a second son named Beall Ijames who was married to Elizabeth Little. Beall Ijames was the slave master of a black man named Brooks. Beall Ijames never sold his slave, but gave him his name.  This Brooks Ijames is the great-great grandfather of Dorothy Graham."  

     To Clarify some of the above. The William Ijames who married Elizabeth Jones was "William b. Iiams b. 22 Dec. 1699 - All Hallow's Parish, Anne Arundel Co., Maryland and he died here about May 11, 1739. He married Elizabeth Jones on 9 Oct 1720 in Anne Arundel Co., Maryland. Elizabeth was born 15 Jun 1697 and died after 1774 Anne Arundel Co., Maryland. He never went to North Carolina nor had a son Beall Ijames.

     There is a Beale Ijames who was born in 1767 the son of John Iiams and Ariana Worthington. Beale's siblings all ventured south most settling in North Carolina. Beale married Elizabeth Little in 1791 in North Carolina.

     I am sure that the information given from generation to generation by the descendants of Brooks Ijames was seemingly correct but documentation of other researchers disprove the [sic] this by church records, wills, and etc.

A Friend of Friends, I am here to help, to care, to honor and share with respect, with kindness, with reverence. With the hopes that a name or a date or any information that I have, could help another move on to find a family member, or an enslaved ancestor and that they will never be forgotten.

Thank you to Sandra over at "I Never Knew My Father" and Luckie over at "Our Georgia Roots" for bringing this most important message and issue to all of us, that we all understand how critical it is for those who can share their stories, that in turn will help you tell your story...completely.

In my family history I have the names of the slaves that were on my 5th great grandfather, Beal Ijames plantation. I will be posting five generations of the descendants of: John Wesley Ijames, a slave on the Beal Ijames plantation. Being that there is quite a bit of information, I have decided that each generation will be an individual post and I will attempt to post at least once to twice a week. The information I have will be posted exactly as I had received it. I feel it is extremely important to get what information I have on the slaves in my family history out there in hopes to helping another.

I want it to be known that I am not the researcher of this information. My dear friend Roberta and her husband Guy who I am a very distant cousin to, has spent the last 40 years researching the Ijames family history. Any and all credit goes to this wonderful lady who spent hours, days, years compiling our family's history. Roberta has given me a gift of a lifetime, one I have no idea or way of thanking her properly for. Without Roberta's help and support, I would not have the information I am about to give to you or the information on my direct Ijames/Eimes line. Thank you Roberta, you are amazing.

My 5th great grandfather Beal Ijames 08 February 1767 ~ 06 July 1855, was a slave master and owner of the Beal Ijames Plantation, located in Mocksville, North Carolina.

It is said that Beal Ijames did not believe in selling his slaves and making sure that those slaves at the Ijames Plantation had a good life. I am so glad for that. Reading this, I was relieved and felt that my Beal Ijames was a decent man.

I have been searching and searching for my paternal great-grandmother LouElla JARBOE's death date. The last citing on earth was abt: 1903 - 1904. She married my great-grandfather, Robert Denton IJAMES, b. 15 Jan 1873, Owensboro, KY, d. 20 Aug 1903 from an appendicitis.

I have searched on Ancestry.com to no avail. There are LouElla Jarboes, but not mine. I have also left messages on the Ancestry.com message boards, nothing yet. My Aunt Virginia has actually contacted an archivist in the court house in Hardinsburg, KY, no findings there.
After putting a call into the Kentucky Room, I was contacted by a gentleman that works in the Kentucky Room from the Owensboro Library in KY and it turned out that we are distantly related thru the PATE line and he said he had been looking for LouElla too and has found nothing on her death or anything after 1903-1904. No obituaries, death certs., Census records. She disappeared into thin air, very frustrating.
I would love to knock down this brickwall more than anything and I refuse to give up! I have tried freebie sites but unable to come up with anything there too.
This is my first time for "MADNESS MONDAY" and hopefully gave as much info as possible.

My great Aunt Virginia Lee Ijames b: 05 Jan 1895. Owensboro, Daviess, Kentucky. Married John Adam Probst 25 Mar 1925. d: 24 June 1966 in Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky.



I never had the opportunity to meet her but from what I understand, she was quite a lady. She was a chef on ships. I finally found her in the 1930 "Crew of Vessels" Pittsburgh, PA Census Report, I did the happy dance! This photo which a genealogy friend, Rachel found for me, I cannot take credit for and the Census report I found are the only two items I have for her. My Aunt Virginia located a few photos of her recently, now I know what she looked like, (another post). I am slowly learning more about her. My Aunt Virginia and I were named after her.
