1919 ~ Remembering Albert 'Fritz' Tabeling and Family ~

Lillie Mae née Pate and Albert 'Fritz' Tabeling  

Be it remembered on this day, the 27th day of January 1919, my paternal great-grandfather, Albert 'Fritz' Tabeling, born 25 Sept 1870, Davies County, Owensboro, Kentucky, passed away in Cloverport, Kentucky from the 1918-1919 Spanish Flu Pandemic. 

Five days earlier on Jan 22, 1919, my great-grandmother, Lillie Mae née Pate, born 1879 (Albert's wife),  passed away due to a miscarriage, complicated by the Spanish Flu . . . leaving my grandmother, Ines, aka Inez Tabeling, [1908-1983], and her five sisters, orphans. 

In June of 1919, their sister, Margaret 'Maggie' Tabeling, born 1903, died from Cerebral Meningitis. Typhoid Fever was listed on the death certificate as contributing to her death. The newspaper clipping below states, "Miss Tabeling Dies of Complications Caused From The Effects of Influenza", but wasn't listed on her death certificate. Maggie would have been 16 years old in September of 1919. 

My grandmother Ines and her sisters, Oletha [1902-1970], Josephine [1906-1962], Gladys [1910-1980] and Viola [1915-2003] were split up and lived with various family members. Oletha and Viola lived with their grandfather, Sylvanus 'Vaul' Pate [1852- 1939]. Gladys and my grandmother, Ines, lived with Mr. and Mrs. S.B. Laslie, and Josephine lived with Miss Annie Allen and brother, Mr. Herman Allen.

Albert, Lillie Mae, Margaret 'Maggie' and Infant Tabeling, are buried together at the Cloverport Cemetery, in Cloverport, Kentucky. Albert and Lillie's twins, Morgan [1913-1913] and Mammie [1913-1913], both died of Cholera . . . they are buried together at the Campbellite Cemetery in Tarfork, Kentucky. 

Note: The headstone in the photo above lists all of Albert Tabeling's family names. Never having a headstone or grave marker, my aunt Virginia [granddaughter to Albert] and her son, Jim, designed and paid for the headstone to have all their names honored in one place. Morgan and Mamie are buried at Campbellite Cemetery in Tarfork, Kentucky. Currently, there is no headstone or grave marker on their grave at Campbellite Cemetery. 

As we journey through our current pandemic, my thoughts frequently turn to my paternal great-grandparents and their children, the tragedies they went thru and the pain they endured ~ Rest in Peace my Tabeling family ~

Sentimental Sunday ~ In Memory of my Grand-uncle Morgan ~

In 1913, Morgan Tabeling, my paternal grand uncle, passed away from Cholera at only three months old . . . his twin sister, Mamie, also passed away from Cholera, just nine days later.  He is laid to rest in an unmarked grave at the Tarfork Cemetery in Breckinridge Co., Tarfork, KY.

Morgan's mother and father (my great-grandparents), sister and infant sibling, have been buried in an unmarked grave for over 90 years, in the Cloverport Cemetery, in Cloverport, KY.

In 2015, my aunt and I discussed purchasing a headstone for the Tabeling family grave at the Cloverport Cemetery and including Mamie and her twin brother, Morgan's name even though they are both buried at the Tarfork Cemetery . . . Mamie and Morgan's name are now included and inscribed on this beautiful headstone that my cousin Jim, purchased in June of 2015, for the Tabeling family.

In August of 2015, my family and I traveled to Kentucky to visit my aunt . . . we all took a trip to the Cloverport Cemetery to honor and have a little ceremony for the Tabeling family and their long overdue, headstone.

Tombstone Tuesday ~ A Headstone for the Tabeling's ~

In July of 1913, my grand-aunt, Mamie (1913-1913) and grand-uncle, Morgan Tabeling (twins), children of my great-grandparents, Albert and Lillie Mae Tabeling, both passed . . . nine days apart, from Cholera and were buried at the Tarfork Cemetery in Kentucky . . . their graves unmarked.

In 1919, my great-grandparents, Albert (1870-1919) and Lille Mae (1879-1919) nee Pate, along with their unborn child (Lillie died from a miscarriage due to the complications of the Spanish flu) and daughter, Maggie (1903-1919) Tabeling, passed away from the Spanish Flu . . . their graves also unmarked.

My aunt Virginia (Ginnie) and I have chatted for a long time about wanting to place a monument or marker on their graves. We decided to look into the cost, so I contacted the Cloverport Cemetery and spoke with the very nice caretaker there by the name of, Mr. Wallace . . . he put us in touch with Mark at Crume's Monuments, in Caneyville, Kentucky, a family owned business since 1951. . . I have never talked with nicer folk than the Crume's and Mr. Wallace.

My cousin, Jim, aunt Ginnie's son, was visiting his mom in Kentucky from Florida last May. He had a trip planned to visit his paternal grandparents grave in Caneyville . . .afterwards, he stopped in at Crume's Monuments, next thing I know, he had purchased the monument for our Tabeling's grave and I am getting an email from Mark with a picture of the headstone to be . . . thanks to my cousin Jim's generosity, our great-grandparents, great-aunts and uncle are finally, after 96 years, honored with a headstone on their grave. Thank you cousin, Jim.

My aunt Ginnie designed the headstone . . . even though Mamie and Morgan are buried at the Tarfork Cemetery, she felt that their names needed to be with the rest of their family. I have noted in their memorials on Find A Grave that they are not actually buried in the same plot as their parents but at least they too are remembered and their names are in stone.

In August of 2015, my family and I, traveled in our Motorhome to visit my aunt Ginnie in Louisville, Kentucky . . . we had the greatest visit. We took a trip to Cloverport so we could actually see the new headstone in place and have a little family memorial . . . I took the above photo while there. Kentucky is so beautiful . . . I felt so at home there . . . missing my aunt and all the green beautiful hills.

Sentimental Sunday ~ 1995 ~ Grand Canyon, Arizona

Slowly, we have been moving back into our home after living in our RV for over four weeks due to a leak from our old refrigerator. The flooring in our entire home had to be replaced. As I put my genea-office back together, I am reorganizing, scanning, and getting rid of things I don’t need any longer. 

I came across this sweet photo of my daughter and my mom, Elfriede Haf (1933-2010), sitting on the rim of the Grand Canyon in Arizona, in August of 1995 . . . it was a wonderful trip. This summer we are taking a road trip in our RV across country to visit my eighty-four year old aunt in Louisville, Kentucky.  Our first stop . . . the Grand Canyon, I would like to find that same spot and take a photo with my daughter.

Heading out of Arizona, we will then travel on over to Rowlett, Texas, stopping to visit family there. As we travel thru the different states, we plan to take our time and sight see until we get to Missouri, to visit more family . . . and then onto Kentucky.

In Kentucky, I have quite a few family history trips planned. Several of our Tabeling’s that passed away in 1919 from the Spanish flu, are buried at the Cloverport Cemetery together in one plot . . . they have never had a marker for their grave. My aunt and cousin purchased a headstone for them and it was recently installed. My aunt and I will be taking a trip to Cloverport to see that new headstone . . . so grateful that they now have a marker on their grave. I have a few relatives buried at the famous and beautiful Cave Hill Cemetery there in Louisville, so I plan to visit that cemetery also.

Looking forward to getting out of Dodge, taking lots of photos, and making lots of memories to keep and hold onto.

Remembering my 1st cousin, 2x removed. Laura was born on this day, the 29th of January, 1900, in Breckinridge Co., Kentucky, one-hundred thirteen years ago, today.

Little did I know in April of 2008, when we drove to Kentucky from California and found this wonderful cemetery and took this photo, that Laura was one of my cousins. I had just started doing my family history in 2008.

When I visited Saint Mary of the Woods cemetery, there were several TABELING grave sites and I was making sure I snapped photos of all their graves, not really knowing of our kinship, yet, if any. These photos have been tucked away on my computer since then.  Slowly, I am learning more and more of my Tabeling ancestors. Happy Birthday cousin, Laura ~

Albert and Lillie Mae had nine children, Oletha (1902~1970), Maggie (1903~1919), Josephine (1906~1962), my grandmother, Ines (1908~1983), Gladys Ollie (1910~1980), the twins, Morgan (1913~1913) and Mamie (1913~1913), Viola 'Bessie' (1915~2003) and Infant Tabeling (1919~1919).

It is believed that my great-grandfather, Albert and 16 year old Maggie, died during the 1918-1919 Pandemic Flu. According to my great-grandmother, Lillie Mae's death certificate, death was due to a miscarriage, complicated by the flu in 1919 . . . it is believed that both Infant and Lillie Mae were buried together . . . Albert and Lillie Mae, died only five days apart from each other, leaving my grandmother, Ines, and her sisters, Oletha, Gladys, Viola and Josephine, orphaned.

According to the U.S. 1920 Census for Breckinridge Co., Kentucky, my grandmother, Ines and her sister, Gladys, were taken in by the Laslie Family on Hartford Rd. in Cloverport, KY.  I am still researching where Oletha, Viola and Josephine, ended up living. I do believe they resided with their aunt Emma Robinson née Tabeling . . . the search continues.

In 2009, my beautiful mom (1933~2010), myself, my husband and my granddaughter, all traveled to Louisville, Kentucky to meet and visit my aunt Ginnie for the first time. We then traveled for about two hours from her home to Cloverport, Kentucky, visiting the very peaceful, quaint and tucked away, Cloverport Cemetery, where Albert, Lillie Mae, Infant Tabeling, Mamie, Morgan, and Maggie, are buried together in one family plot. The Tabeling Family has never had a headstone or grave marker . . . one day, I would like to be able to have a marker made and placed on their grave.

YOUNG BOY DIES.

     Roy Pate, the eight year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Pate, died May 14 and was buried the following day in the Pisgah grave yard.  He was a well informed boy for one of his age and had a splendid disposition. His last words were "Lord take me."  Though he said he hated to leave his loved ones, he was willing to do God's will.

W.B. Taul and wife visited his father, Mr. Joe Taul, near Clover Creek, Saturday and Sunday.

S.A. Pate has moved back here after a resident of about three years at West Point.

Chas. Tabeling has the mumps.

Mrs. L.C. Taul continues in poor health.
L.C. Taul has returned from Louisville, where he has been to replenish his stock of dry goods and groceries. 

Our spring school is progressing nicely with Miss Maud Ryan as teacher. 

Tom Tabeling, wife and baby, of Ruth, were recent visitors in this Neighborhood. He sold his home interest while here to his sister Dorris.
